About me

How I Work:

I provide a warm and confidential space to support you in finding your own way. Sometimes a chance to voice what's going on for you can offer relief. In the safe space we'll create together, we can reflect on any issues you might have, any difficult feelings, and any unwanted thoughts. We can also discover, affirm and celebrate your talents, achievements and strengths, as we travel the road to insight, growth and compassion. The aim is to find meaning and the capacity to live a fuller life. I tend to work in a long-term, open-ended way. We can discuss this further in our initial consultation.

I don't take the 'blank screen' approach, meaning I don't stare at you in silence. If I don't share my thoughts with you, the therapy is only taking place in my head. I provide a non-judgemental and loving space, where I value you for the unique individual you are. This kind of environment can be rare to find, and powerful to experience.

There are no guarantees as to what will result from therapy. It can be an enlightening and challenging journey, introducing a range of new perspectives and possibilities, and interrogating some of your assumption, beliefs and behaviours. New ways of being can be daring and demanding for you and for those around you. Please be aware that insight and change can be unsettling processes as well as desired outcomes. Some patience and bravery may be required from you, through which I'll support you to the best of my ability.

My Approach:

As an Integrative therapist, I'm trained in a range of modalities, so I tailor my approach to suit your needs. I'm informed by several theoretical traditions, including humanistic, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, developmental, transpersonal and body-oriented therapy. Working with the body, I use techniques such as mindfulness, sensing, breathing, grounding and visualising. Monitoring our embodied states is particularly important, since emotions are physiological events, created, felt and regulated through the body.

The authentic relationship between us is at the heart of my practice. Genuine empathy, warmth and humour enable us to make soul connections. I've experienced in my own personal therapy the power of authentic and enabling relationships. I've faced my own life challenges, and I found compassion, care and creativity in my relationships with my therapists. I aim to provide the same.

What to Expect in the First Session:

Here we'd explore, with your permission, what's brought you to therapy, what you hope for, or fear, and address any questions you might have. I'll also have some questions to ask you about your experience and your history, although it's your choice what you choose to share. It's a chance to see if we're suited to work together. There is no obligation attached to this meeting. Please see my website for further details, including on meeting online:

Supervision:

I'm also a supervisor. I provide supervision to trainee and qualified counsellors. Both psychotherapy and supervision aim to help people grow and evolve. Please see my Supervision page either here on the Counselling Directory, or on my website, for further details.

Training, qualifications & experience

I'm a fully qualified and highly experienced Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist, a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP), and a Full Clinical Member of the UKCP, working from East London, within easy reach of North and Central London. I follow the BACP and UKCP Ethical Framework for Professional Practice. I'm also a member of the Body Psychotherapy Network, an Approved Anxiety UK Therapist and a Certified Cyber Therapist. I'm a highly experienced therapist, having completed my Post-Graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling, and MA/Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapy at one of the leading Integrative therapy training institutions in the UK and Europe. As well as working in private practice, I lecture and teach at various psychotherapy training institutes in London.

I've previously volunteered at the East London Mental Health Service (ELMS, previously MIND), an organisation offering short term counselling to the local community, as part of my commitment to inclusion, meaning I work with and welcome clients from diverse backgrounds. I'm committed to developing my personal and professional integration through reflective practice, supervision and Continual Professional Development (CPD). I've also volunteered at Highbury Counselling Centre, providing long-term counselling and therapy to clients. I've worked with adults with long-term mental health issues, in supported housing or residential care homes, as part of the Forest Community Project team. My first MA was in English Language and Literature at Oxford University. I've previously worked in the fields of journalism, art and creative writing.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
